Knocking the box office giant off of its
top spot perch, "Men In Black III" grabbed the number one position to begin the
Memorial Day holiday weekend of May 25-28, 2012.
The Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones starring
sequel to the popular Sci-Fi franchise nabbed $18 million on opening day and
another $19.6 million on Saturday while estimated to pull in $70 million over
the four day weekend.
Slipping to the runner-up slot for the
first time since being released a month ago, the Joss Whedon directed superhero
blockbuster "The Avengers" starring Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris
Evans and Chris Hemsworth ended up with $9.7 million on Friday and $14.6 million
on Saturday while pacing towards another $48.5 million over the long weekend to
put its domestic grand total earnings at a whopping $525.2 million.
Rounding out the top five at the box
office in estimated totals are the Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch
and Brooklyn Decker fronted Hasbro game based caper "Battleship" ($13.3
million), followed by the Sacha Baron Cohen helmed comedy "The Dictator" ($11.5
million) and Johnny Depp's new vampire comedy/fantasy flick "Dark Shadows" ($9.4
million).
Also of note, the newly released Bradley
Parker directed horror film "Chernobyl Diaries" fell just outside of the top
five after a strong first day while then slowing down as it's in line to end up
with a sixth place worthy take of $9.2 million.
