Box Office: "Men In Black III" Dethrones "The Avengers"

Knocking the box office giant off of its top spot perch, "Men In Black III" grabbed the number one position to begin the Memorial Day holiday weekend of May 25-28, 2012.

The Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones starring sequel to the popular Sci-Fi franchise nabbed $18 million on opening day and another $19.6 million on Saturday while estimated to pull in $70 million over the four day weekend.

Slipping to the runner-up slot for the first time since being released a month ago, the Joss Whedon directed superhero blockbuster "The Avengers" starring Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth ended up with $9.7 million on Friday and $14.6 million on Saturday while pacing towards another $48.5 million over the long weekend to put its domestic grand total earnings at a whopping $525.2 million.

Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated totals are the Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch and Brooklyn Decker fronted Hasbro game based caper "Battleship" ($13.3 million), followed by the Sacha Baron Cohen helmed comedy "The Dictator" ($11.5 million) and Johnny Depp's new vampire comedy/fantasy flick "Dark Shadows" ($9.4 million).

Also of note, the newly released Bradley Parker directed horror film "Chernobyl Diaries" fell just outside of the top five after a strong first day while then slowing down as it's in line to end up with a sixth place worthy take of $9.2 million.
