Right on schedule, the sequel to "The Hunger Games" has begun principal photography today (September 10).
Shooting primarily in Atlanta, Georgia,
before moving to the beaches and jungles of Hawaii, "Catching Fire" will wrap in
late December of this year.
Lionsgate's President of Productions,
Eric Feig, said of the project, "The stakes are raised in every way in this
second story, and we are thrilled to get the production underway in these
perfect locations, with our excellent returning cast and some world class actors
in new roles."
Returning stars Jennifer Lawrence and
Josh Hutcherson will be joined by Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth
Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Stanley Tucci, and
Donald Sutherland.
The sequel to the blockbuster film
follows Katniss as she returns home after winning the Hunger Games along with
Peeta. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close
friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way, Katniss
senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in
control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter
Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.
Ready to pass out another batch of golden
popcorn trophies, the nominees for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards were unveiled on
Monday evening (April 30).
With the show being held at the Gibson
Amphitheater in Los Angeles, California on June 3rd, this year sees "The Hunger
Games" and "Bridesmaids" perched atop the pack with eight nominations
apiece.
As for individual accolades, the Favorite
Actress category is quite the heated race with Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Jennifer
Lawrence, Kristen Wiig and Rooney Mara all in the running.
As for their male counterparts, Favorite
Actor hopefuls include Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt,
Josh Hutcherson and Ryan Gosling.
With fan voting opening up online
beginning on Tuesday, May 1st at 8AM ET, the complete list of nominees for the

The Hunger Games director Gary Ross is
set to sit down with Lionsgate executives Monday for a key meeting that will
help determine his role in the follow-up to the mega-blockbuster.
Contrary to previous media reports, Ross
-- who returned from a vacation in Italy on Friday -- has not exited the booming
franchise. But he is not yet signed to return for the second installment,
Catching Fire, and sources say the filmmaker is concerned about an ambitious
production schedule that would require shooting to begin in August so that star
Jennifer Lawrence can complete her work before she is due to start filming a
sequel to Fox's X-Men: First Class in January.
The Hollywood Reporter said last week
that Fox has informed studios and talent agencies of its planned start date for
the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men movie. Since Fox's deal with Lawrence predates
her contract for Hunger Games, X-Men is in a priority position. With the script
for the second Hunger Games not yet locked, that means all preparations for a
sequel would have to be done in four months -- a tough schedule to
meet.
