While it doesn't appear as if the sequel
will be able to better its predecessor, "The Expendables 2" is still on track to
steal away the top spot at the box office over the weekend of August 17-19,
2012.
The testosterone filled action caper
starring Sylvester Stallone , Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Statham pulled in
an estimated $10.5 million on Friday and$10.2 million on Saturday with an
expected $28.7 million weekend total being shy of the $34.8 million opening
mustered up by the first film.
Bumped down to runner-up status is the
reigning top cinema money maker, "The Bourne Legacy," as the latest installment
in the Tony Gilroy directed action/adventure franchise scored a $5.4 million
Friday and $7.1 million on Saturday pegging predicted sophomore weekend earnings
at $17.0 million.
Filling out the top five at the box
office in forecasted totals are the newly released LAIKA 3D stop-motion comedy
thriller "ParaNorman" ($14 million) and Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis'
political comedy "The Campaign" ($13.3 million), followed by the Whitney
Houston/Jordin Sparks featured drama "Sparkle" ($12 million), followed by
.
Also of note, the well-received Jennifer
Garner and Joel Edgerton helmed Disney drama "The Odd Life of Timothy Green"
took in $15.1 million in ticket sales as of Sunday - though it had a two day
jumpstart after having been released on Wednesday rather than Friday.
