Indie Roundup: "A Kid With a Bike"

Information come from online news.Thank you for your reading.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne have won the top prize in Cannes twice -- for "Rosetta" (1999) and "L'Enfant" (2005) -- making them some of the most celebrated directors working today. Yet you'd be hard pressed to see their movies in this country; they tend to play for a week in New York and Los Angeles before disappearing. And that's a shame. Their movies, usually set in the seedy underbelly of French-speaking Belgium, show an enviable economy -- not a single shot is wasted -- while being shot in a manner that makes you forget the movie is scripted. Like the semidocumentary feel of Daren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler"? -- that was cribbed from the Dardenne brothers. Their latest movie, "A Kid With a Bike," is a gem of a film will be, hopefully, seen by more people in the States.

For movie mavens and film school grads, the movie's title might recall Vittorio De Sica's 1948 landmark movie "The Bicycle Thieves," about a father and son looking for a bike. Dardenne brothers' movie is about a boy with a bike looking for his dad.

The film opens with Cyril (Thomas Doret), a ferociously energetic 11-year-old, making yet another phone call to his father, only to get a recording saying the number has been disconnected. A month earlier, the dad dropped off the kid at a foster home and then not only moved without a forwarding address, but also sold Cyril's cherished bike. Unable to fathom the painful truth, the kid bolts from the home and sets out for their old apartment. On the run from social workers, he races into a doctor's clinic and grabs a random stranger -- a childless, bottle-blond hairdresser named Samantha (Cecile De France) -- and clings to her with feral intensity. "You can hold on to me," she tells him. "But not so tight."

That improbable introduction begins an unlikely relationship. We never get a clear reason why Samantha so readily accepts him into her life — the Dardennes aren't much for back story -- but De France's performance is so nuanced that we completely buy that she does. When she tracks down Cyril's bike and buys it back, he brashly asks her to foster him. She agrees. And when she helps track down Cyril's dad, and he proves to be a world-class loser -- telling Samantha that he doesn't want to see his son again because he stresses him out -- she consoles him.

"Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ teaser trailer gives the first glimpse at the last "Twilight "

If you were one of the millions of people to watch "The Hunger Games" this past weekend, there's a good chance you also got to see the first full teaser trailer for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2." A teaser for the teaser was released online last week.

At the end of "Breaking Dawn - Part 1," Bella was about to die from the strain of giving birth and Edward had no choice but to turn her into a vampire. The film ended with her opening her now red eyes. In the teaser for "Part 2," we see Bella beginning to embrace her new self, darting through the woods with super-fast speed.

After Jacob and Edward express their reactions to the new Bella , we finally see Bella as a vampire. She has the deep red eyes of a "newborn" vamp and pale skin -- well, paler. It ends with her stalking a deer in the forest. Clearly, she's getting in touch with her bloodthirsty side.

It seems like 48 seconds just wasn't enough for some Twi-Hards, but it's obvious they're hungry for more.

If you came in late to "The Hunger Games," or it wasn't attached to the print you saw, or you just want to watch it over again, the teaser is now online.

Jennifer Lawrence: Must-Knows About "The Hunger Games" Star

Two years ago, it was Jennifer Lawrence, who? Then came a starring role in the 2011 indie sleeper "Winter's Bone" and an unexpected Oscar nomination for best actress.
Despite the awards recognition, the 5-foot-7-inch Kentuckian still wasn't a household name.

That changed this week, when "The Hunger Games" star, who is 21, got the Kirsten Stewart "Twilight" treatment, with crowds of screaming fans, pushy paparazzi, and multiple magazine covers. Here at Yahoo! interest is rising fast, where Jennifer Lawrence searches have bumped up 43% to land in the top 350 searches with keen interest among males ages 25 to 54 (75% of searchers).

What's the Story of the movie "The Hunger Games"

Last weekend, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's comedic chemistry helped "21 Jump Street" arrest the box-office winning ways of "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax," which held the top spot for two straight weeks. While the raunchy comedy has the right to remain the top money earner, the odds are not in its favor, seeing as one of the most talked-about movies of the year, "The Hunger Games," opens on more than 4,000 screens this weekend. Because no one wants to compete with the blockbuster, it's the only movie opening wide.

Expect big numbers from the movie based on Suzanne Collins's best-selling novel, starting with these: 26 million copies of the book are in print in the U.S. alone; it spent over three consecutive years on the best-seller list; and the frenzied fan base has already broken the advanced ticket sales record with over 2,000 shows sold out. In case you've somehow avoided the hype, we boil down the movie and predict which fans might enjoy it.

What's the Story? To remind the Districts that rebellion is futile, every year the Capital chooses 24 teenaged Tributes to battle one another in a televised fight to the death. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a coal miner's daughter and a skilled hunter, and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), a strong-willed and able-bodied son of a baker, are this year's reluctant Tributes from District 12. In order to have any chance of survival, Katniss and Peeta must learn to play the dangerous games, or be hunted down by well-trained career Tributes, and murdered on national television.

Is "The Hunger Games" violent?

Information come from online news.Thank you for your reading.

Is "The Hunger Games" violent? Yes. There are spear throwers, sword wielders, genetically engineered wasps, gigantic dogs, raging wildfires, and even a neck twist or two. But the gore tends to be swift, and the camera never lingers on the slaughter because the bloodshed isn't the story's reason for being. The point is the choices an individual teenager must make under the pressure of millions of people watching her, not all of them strangers. When Katniss ultimately raises her bow and targets another human, it's an extension of a promise that she made to protect the weak and to push herself as far as she can to survive and return home to the sister that depends on her. Katniss' actions define who she is, including why she kills and when. We are what we do. There is not a moment that is cheesy, exploitative, or unrealistic.

Here's the big question circulating on the net: Can my kids see "The Hunger Games"? One parent asked: Can I take my mature 10-year-old? Isn't it going to be too violent? Isn't it about kids killing kids and adults watching and doing nothing? The more important question is: Have the kids read the book?

If the kids have read the book, they'll know that there's a lot more to "The Hunger Games" than a gladiator-style violent battle. Assuming the worse and reacting against it is like saying that "Romeo and Juliet" is about teen suicide. Yes, it is, but mostly it isn't.

So, back to "The Hunger Games." If your kids read the book, didn't freak out, and want to go to the first show, that's a sure sign that they are ready for the movie. And, if they can read the book on their own, they are probably at least 10 or 11. I doubt children younger than that should be opening up this particular box of nightmares — although odds are that a child's nightmare is a lot scarier than "Hunger Games." And, certainly, the birth scene in "Twilight: Breaking Dawn: Part 1" is more horrifying than anything you'll see here.

Oscar winner Octavia Spencer honored in hometown

Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer promised Alabama fans Wednesday that she would do everything possible to make sure some of her future movies are made in her home state.

Spencer, who won this year's best supporting actress Oscar for her performance as the maid "Minnie" in "The Help," told the crowd in Montgomery that her home would always be in Alabama.

Wearing a purple dress, she rode up to the Statehouse in a pink limousine for the ceremony. She was serenaded by the band from her alma mater, Jefferson Davis High School. She even paused for a moment to lead the band.

Multiple speakers, including Gov. Robert Bentley and leaders of the House and Senate, greeted Spencer at a joint session of the Legislature. Bentley proclaimed Wednesday as "Octavia Spencer Day in Alabama.

"We want to make sure your next Oscar is on a film shot right here in Alabama," Speaker Mike Hubbard told the actress.

The running joke throughout Spencer's visit concerned Minnie's famous pies in the movie, including one she made for her boss that included a nauseating ingredient and led to her being fired.

"Don't hand me a piece of pie," Senate president pro tem Del Marsh, R-Anniston, told Spencer.

Spencer was guest of honor at a reception at a Montgomery hotel later and Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange presented her with a key to the city. Strange invited Spencer to return often to her hometown.

"But please leave your pies at home," Strange said as a member of the audience chanted "Don't bring no pies."

The latest movie called "The Lorax " will open sooner

The Lorax," which opens in theaters Friday, is the latest adaptation of a classic Dr. Seuss children's book. Dr. Thedor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, created wonderful rhyming books that have delighted children and parents alike for decades. His books, although not moralistic, frequently introduced issues like prejudice, consumerism, and aging to children, albeit in a sweet and humorous way.

His classic book "The Lorax," first published in 1971, touched on pollution and the environment. The story follows a young boy who lives in a smoggy, dirty world. He visits a person called the "Once-ler," who tells him that the world was once bright and beautiful and full of Truffula trees, fish, birds, and other animals. But the Once-ler cut down all the trees, despite the warnings of a creature called the Lorax:

"I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees."

The release date (March 2) of "The Lorax" coincides with the 108th birthday of Dr. Seuss. The movie stars the vocal talents of Danny DeVito as the Lorax, Zac Efron as the boy Ted, and Ed Helms as the Once-ler. Characters that don't appear in the book have also been added, including Taylor Swift as Audrey, a girl Ted likes, and Betty White as Grammy Norma, Ted's grandmother.

There has been criticism of the film from both liberal and conservative camps, citing the film's marketing with Mazda, IHOP, and others as in direct opposition to the book's original message and intent. Conservatives like Lou Dobbs have claimed that the environmental message is an attempt to "indoctrinate our children." But maybe what is most interesting is that we have yet another adaptation of a Seuss classic to contend with.

Gone with the Wind --the most beautiful story

Gone with the Wind is a 1939 American historical epic film adapted from Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer-winning 1936 novel of the same name. It was produced by David O. Selznick and directed by Victor Fleming from a screenplay by Sidney Howard. Set in the 19th century American South, the film stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland, and Hattie McDaniel, among others, and tells a story of the American Civil War and Reconstruction era from a white Southern point of view.

The film received 10 Academy Awards, a record that stood for 20 years until Ben-Hur surpassed it in 1960. In the American Film Institute's inaugural Top 100 Best American Films of All Time list of 1998, it was ranked fourth, and in 1989 was selected to be preserved by the National Film Registry. The film was the longest American sound film made up to that time – 3 hours 44 minutes, plus a 15 minute intermission, and was among the first of the major films shot in color ,winning the first Academy Award for Best Cinematography in the category for color films. It became the highest-grossing film of all-time shortly after its release, holding the position until 1966; after adjusting for inflation, it has still earned more than any other film in box office revenue. As of 2012, there are five surviving cast members from the film.
